What is Odoo Runbot, and how do you use it?

Odoo Runbot lets you open a live Odoo in your browser in seconds, try the latest features, and test modules, without installing anything and without touching real data. It is a favourite of developers and consultants. Here is what it is, how to use it, and where it stops.

What is Odoo Runbot, and what is it for?

Odoo Runbot is Odoo's public build-and-test farm. It automatically builds and tests every version of Odoo, and exposes temporary live instances you can click into. You get a throwaway Odoo, preloaded and ready, to explore the newest features or validate a module.

Because the environments are temporary and hold no real data, you can experiment freely. Break something, and it resets on its own.

Real-time test environments

The moment you request an instance, Runbot loads it with the modules and configuration to interact with the latest Odoo build. You can run through a business process, spot inconsistencies, and iterate fast. Useful for a quick client demo or to sanity-check a custom development.

Runbot vs Odoo.sh

Both live in the Odoo development world, but they solve different problems. Runbot is for immediacy: quick tests, demos, and experiments in temporary environments. Odoo.sh is for long-term development, continuous integration, and production, where you need control, data persistence, and real customisation. If that is your question, read where each hosting option fits on our Odoo hosting page.

How to access Odoo Runbot.

Accessing Runbot is easy and needs no advanced technical knowledge. In short:

  • Go to the official Runbot URL on odoo.com (in the open-source section).

  • Pick the version and edition you want to try: Community or Enterprise.

  • Click "Connect" on the runbot build. A preconfigured Odoo opens (frontend and backend access).

  • Explore the modules, create records, run tests. Everything resets automatically after a few hours.

Community or Enterprise

Runbot lets you switch between the two editions and feel the difference directly. Odoo Community is the free, open-source edition. Odoo Enterprise adds features, official support, and advanced capabilities. Which one fits depends on your size and needs, and it is exactly the kind of thing Runbot lets you compare before you commit.

Who is Odoo Runbot for?

Runbot is built for technical profiles:

  • Developers validate new modules, test integrations, and try custom code without touching production.

  • Consultants run live demos and build prototypes that show what Odoo can do.

  • Technical users run functional tests to check the platform meets expectations.

You do not need an account, a payment, or an install. Log in, pick a version, and start. For deeper integration with other Odoo services you may need to link a formal account.

What you can test in Odoo Runbot.

The default modules

A Runbot instance comes with core modules already installed: sales, inventory, purchasing, accounting, HR, and more. That makes it quick to get a feel for the environment and to see which parts of Odoo match your needs.

Temporary databases

You can create products, generate quotes and invoices, and simulate a full sales or purchasing flow. Because the database is temporary, every change is wiped when you log out. No risk, no cleanup.

Custom developments across versions

Runbot lets you see how code behaves on a new version and compare behaviour across versions. For a migration or an upgrade, that is a fast way to spot what changes before you commit to it.

The benefits and the limits.

Runbot is perfect for live demos, for comparing Enterprise and Community, and for testing an idea in seconds. That speed is the whole point.

The limits are the flip side of that speed. Instances are temporary and reset, so there is no data persistence. Performance is shared, so it is not a benchmark for production. And it is not a place to run your business.

When you need control and persistence, you move up: Odoo.sh for continuous integration, or a managed platform like DynCloud, our Odoo hosting, for full control run by the team that knows your Odoo. If an existing environment needs fixing first, that is Odoo recovery.
